Carlo Beltrame, archeologist, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia (beltrame@unive.it)

Carlo Beltrame (Venice 1969), degree v.o. at the University of Padua, Postgraduate diploma at the University of Trieste, PhD in Maritime Civilizations at the University of Haifa. He has taught naval archeology at the University of Tuscia in Viterbo and since 2001 has been teaching maritime archeology at the Ca 'Foscari University. In the latter university, he coordinated the first Italian Master's degree in maritime archeology. He also teaches at the Interuniversity Specialization School based at the University of Trieste. He spent a research period at the Center of Maritime Archeology in Roskilde. He was a member of the scientific committee of the International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archeology, of which he curated the Venice edition of 2000. He worked for many years as a freelancer, especially as an underwater archaeologist but also for the editing of Evaluations of Archaeological Impact. He specializes mainly in the archeology of shipbuilding but is also interested in methodology in maritime archeology, management and enhancement of submerged cultural heritage and maritime trade in the ancient world. From 2001 to 2012, he directed the school excavation on the wreckage of the Mercurio brick (1812) off Punta Tagliamento; he collaborated on the Croatian excavation mission on medieval wrecks on the island of Mljet and now directs a project to study the wrecks with loads of Roman marble in southern and central Italy. He is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Archeology, the Underwater Archaeologist and the Journal of Marine Science Research.

Monica Montefalcone, biologist, Università di Genova (montefalcone@dipteris.unige.it

Monica Montefalcone is a researcher in Ecology (BIO07) at the Department of the Earth, Environment and Life Science (DiSTAV) at the University of Genoa (Italy) and a professor of Tropical Marine Ecology, of Scientific Diving and of Managing Marine Biodiversity. She started to study seagrasses in 1999, she took her PhD in 2007 on Posidonia oceanica ecology, and today she is working in the field of applied research on coastal marine environment, which includes monitoring, characterization, cartography, biodiversity assessment and evaluation of ecological status and changes over time of coastal habitats, such as seagrasses, rocky reefs and coralligenous, submerged caves, and coral reefs. A major component of her studies is the adoption of scientific diving techniques for visual surveys and photographic sampling, and she did many scientific cruises and field activities in the Mediterranean and the tropics. She has participated in numerous national and international research projects. She is member of several scientific societies, and recently she has been working as a scientific consultant of the RAC-SPA (Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas). The results of her studies are condensed in more than 170 scientific publications, including nearly 70 papers on ISI-classified journals, and some book chapters.

Giorgio Caramanna has a PhD in Geology and is qualified as Advanced European Scientific Diver, AAUS Scientific Diver, IDSA Commercial Diver, NAUI Diving Instructor, DAN Instructor and American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor. He was the Italian representative at the European Scientific Diving Panel of the European Science Foundation for several years.
Giorgio moved from Europe to the USA in 2015 and founded geoaquaconsulting.com. He currently works as a scientific diving operations and training consultant for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. In 2018, he was awarded the prestigious "Tridente d'Oro" (Golden Trident) from the International Academy of Underwater Sciences and Techniques.
