"SCIENTIFIC DIVING is diving needed to support research and education and for care and maintenance of the natural and cultural environment. The diving is lead by persons with a scientifically relevant education. The purpose of the diving is to collect information and data through, among other things, observations, photography, filming, mapping, measuring, inventory and collecting of animals, plants and sediments. The scientific diving is mainly performed by units at governmental, regional and local levels. The SCIENTIFIC LIKE diving is commercial and is mainly performed by private or community owned consultancy firms. The tasks are the same as for scientific diving but is not as obviously connected to research and education and for care and maintenance for the natural and cultural environment as is scientific diving. Individuals performing scientific like diving need to have the same certificates as scientific divers."

Finland
ESD standards don't require an academic degree. On Finland the definition goes "a scientist who uses diving in the scientific work". Of course they are practically all academic, but there are few other cases, too.

Germany
In Germany, anybody which fulfills the medical and diving criteria can be certified as scientific diver. We often look for a good scientific background but we also have scientific divers which have no direct academic background

U.K.
Scientific diving at work can be described as any diving operation undertaken in support of science. Because of this, the tasks undertaken under the scientific code can vary markedly.

USA (AAUS)
Scientific diving is defined (29CFR1910.402) as diving performed solely as a necessary part of a scientific, research, or educational activity by employees whose sole purpose for diving is to perform scientific
researchtasks.

Minimum requirements prescribed by the standard of the European Scientific Diving Panel (ESDP).
